What do I bring for my first driving lesson?

You! Your driving licence too. You must have this in your possession before lessons can start. If you need glasses, wear them: you should be able to read a car number plate at a distance of 20.5 meters. Sunglasses are good, especially for winter evenings when the sun is low. Comfortable clothes are better, soft rather than hard shoes.
Do I need to pass the theory test before I can start learning to drive?
No. In fact it is a good idea to learn the theory whilst you are learning the practical as it can bring the subject alive making it easier to understand and remember.

How many lessons will it take me to learn?

Research referred to by the Driving Standards Agency tells us candidates who take around 40 hours of professional training and back it up with plenty of extra practice stand the best chance of passing their test. This doesn't mean you won't do it in less, though it may mean you will need more.
Be sure your instructor is teaching you to drive, not just allowing you to learn test routes off by heart. It is your safety and your future: look after it.

Can I take lessons in my own car?

Yes, depending on experience.

Can a friend or relative teach me how to drive?

The Driving Standards Agency strongly recommends that you take lessons from an Approved Driving Instructor. I do however recommend private practice as it will help you to consolidate on what you have learn't. If your friend or relative teaches you they must be over 21 years of age and have held a Full British Driving Licence for at least 3 years. It's worthwhile remembering too that learning with a friend or relative means you could pick up their bad habits.

How will I know when I'm ready for test?

The progress you make will be monitored in the Drivers record. Once you can complete the subjects in the Drivers record to a satisfactory standard normally a mock test will be conducted to confirm your strengths and weaknesses. You should feel secure with your skills. No-one wants to "string you along" but it is important when settling upon going for test to be honest with yourself about your readiness. If you are unprepared the test will show this up, and you may fail.

Do I have to take my test at the nearest test centre?

No. Usually you take the test close to your home, or in the area where your lessons have been commenced, but it is not compulsory.

How much does a test cost?

Theory tests are currently charged at £30.00, practical tests £62.
How long does the driving test last? Usually about 35 - 45 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

What car will I have to drive on my test?

Usually, the car you learned in. If not, another vehicle can be arranged.

After I have passed my test, do I have to wait for my full licence to come through before I can drive?

No, you can drive yourself out of the test centre, if your car is insured properly. The pass certificate is your qualification.
Keep a note of your driver number (that's the number on your provisional licence which begins with the first five letters of your surname) and the number on your pass certificate when you send your pass certificate away to get a full licence. They may be needed for documentation purposes and make a record in case your application gets lost.
